If that’s not enough reason to visit Yamagata for the 2014 ASPAC, prepare to fall in love with the city’s attractions:
What to do in Yamagata
Yamagata is a large, urban city nestled in the midst of towering mountains. Their city highlights include the Yamadera’s atmospheric temples, a nearby visual and cultural treat. It was founded by Ennin in 860AD, and its building is located along a very steep cliff. Basho, a known Japanese Haiku poet in the 17th century used to refer to the Yamadera in some of his works.
Another must-visit is Zao Onsen’s “snow monsters”, fir trees embraced by thick, nature-molded snow, located at the the ultimate winter skiing and summer hiking destination. For other”easier” activities, you can visit Zao for their cable rides, parks, hot springs, and ropeway.
If you’re a lover of the visual arts, you would also come to love Yamagata’s museums. You can take your pick from the reputable Yamagata Kyodokan,Yamagata Museum of Art, Mogami Yoshiaki Historical Museum, Yamagata Museum of Science and Industry and the Yamagata Prefectural Museum.
