I look around the streets of Davao and I see that there are a lot of salons just sprouting around. Sometimes it makes me wonder if all of the beauticians have really undergone good training since I know that whenever I sit at a salon chair, I put a big part of my life in the hands of some person I don’t personally know. I’ve been to cheap salons and posh salons and I’m still feeling restless. Finally, I stumbled upon a very important realization—that all of these salon-hopping and salon-hunting is useless; after all, hair care is an everyday love affair. (And I can’t possibly go to the salon everyday.)
Instead of spending for occasional salon treatments to dye, moisturize or straighten your unruly hair, here are some of my top tips in hair care:
Invest in high quality shampoo and conditioner. Your shampoo and your conditioner are the ones which really touch your hair everyday so if they are made of really good ingredients, then your hair will be nourished right. Also, if you think that your pre-wash hair doesn’t have a lot of dirt or sweat buildup, you can skip the shampoo. Shampoo is the soap version for the hair. It is made of harsher chemicals because it’s made to clean, while the conditioner’s job is to make it more manageable and, well, conditioned. It IS important to condition your hair every day.
If you think that your hair will spend a lot of time under the sun, it is advised to spray some liquid sunblock on your hair. If you only have sunblock in the lotion or cream version, you can still wipe some off your hair, focusing on the top layers. Anything higher than SPF 20 is advised. The sun is one of the major causes of hair and skin damage so it’s best to arm yourself against it instead of trying to undo the damage done through expensive hair reborn treatments.
Lastly, it is also advised that you indulge in a weekly hair mask or hair spa treatment to “awaken” your hair, to correct the week’s worth of damage from the pollution and weathering and to provide intensive conditioning. You need not go to the salon for this; there are a lot of high end hair treatment creams which are already available at the department stores. For my hair, I trust L’oreal Total Repair 5 Mask.
You can trust the salon to take care of the more complex treatments like the hair rebonding, hair relaxing or hair dyeing. This way, you get to spend less and you’ll never have a bad hair day again! Love your hair properly and your crowning glory will serve its name right. 🙂
