The other weekend (September 21-23) was a milestone for the blogging community in Davao city. The Davao Bloggers, led by President Dulce Lada, commenced the first ever Blog Weekend Bootcamp, a 3-day live-in workshop that included lectures, forums, exercises and fun games for veteran and newbie bloggers. This workshop was held at Malagos Garden Resort, Calinan, Davao city. The event was punctuated with a championship night and an awarding for on-site video projects and on-the-spot blog writing.
Why It Was Memorable
What made this workshop really memorable is the richness of material that the workshop-goers got. Speakers who spearheaded the discussions were the following: esteemed writer, educator and speaker Rene Lizada for Creative writing, award-winning photographer Jojie Alcantara for Photo Blogging, KBP President Roy Geonzon for Blogging Ethics, Google’s Head of Outreach (Southeast Asia) Aileen de Jesus for Blogging 101, Chief Idea Generator of Adsense Flippers Justin Cooke for Niche Blogging, Youtube sensation Kring Elenzano (My Korean Boyfriend and Flippish) for video blogging and Jay de Jesus, US Embassy’s Emerging Media Specialist for “The State of Blogging and Social Media in the Philippines”. E- commerce pioneer and opinion leader Janette Toral also graced the welcome dinner with her keynote speech about the 2012 blogosphere.
More Impressive Milestones
An overwhelming number (nearly 100!) of participants joined the Blog Weekend Bootcamp and, on the second day, the Twitter hashtag #BWB2012 topped the trending list for Philippines. Aside from the talks, there was also a mini-contest for the best on-site blog entry and the best video (group project). Winning blog entry was by Miguel Lisbona, entitled “Don’t be a D*ck, Think Before You Click”. It was a commentary on how blogging and social media usage should be done with more responsibility. On the other hand, winning video entry was made by the group Teampura, which was a 2-minute feature on “Igniting Creativity in the Age of Internet”.
What’s Next for the Davao Bloggers
As a “sequel” to the success of this workshop, the Davao Bloggers Officers are thinking of doing a more
intensive workshop come summer 2013. In the next few months, some of the Davao Bloggers will also be participating in the Startup Weekend, an intense 54-hour event where technopreneurs come together to share ideas, form teams, build products and launch startups. Another upcoming bloggers-initiated event is Wordcamp 2012, which is a gathering of WordPress users all over the Philippines. Wordcamp will take place in Makati, Philippines.
