While most beauty pageants go by the traditional runway walks, costume changes, talent competition and mind-boggling Q and A, the SMART Campus Girl 2011 provided pageant watchers a whiff of fresh ideas.
There was no traditional evening wear competition for this youth-oriented search. No swimwear either in compliance with Davao’s strict local laws protecting women from undue exploitation. And no talent competition either.
What? No talent?
Yes. There was no talent competition. Instead, the candidates were tested according to their sales savvy.
The Q and A likewise provided unique set of questions, testing to the fullest the candidates’ knowledge of the telecommunications industry and the products and services of SMART. Even the introduction bared the candidates’ preferred SMART service which reflected their lifestyles and needs as students.
The result? A jaw-dropping, head-turning competition topped with the excitement of waiting for the final countdown of the text polling that determined the pageant’s texters pick as provided by SMART service.
18-year old Valerie Tenio, a Business Administration student of Mati Doctors College in Mati City, bested four other college campus queens for the coveted Smart Campus Girl 2011 title in this pageant that presented all that unique challenge and definition. She also bagged the Texter’s Choice Award, having garnered nearly 500 text votes in the span of 24 hours. The five-foot-six stunner thus becomes Smart’s new campus ambassadress for the Davao region.
Janessa Ararao of the Davao Oriental State College of Science and Technology also in Mati City was first runner-up while Jona Jane Figueroa of the Holy Child School of Davao was second runner-up. Towering beauty Ledie Lou Labrado of the University of Mindanao-Digos was third runner-up and Ms. Antonette Palencia of JoBS Academy- Davao City was fourth.
Reigning Miss Teen Davao Charmaine Bless Shotwell crowned the winner along with Smart representatives Karen Macapagal and Glenn Mendoza. Providing upbeat production number was Bandila Fusion and the intermission numbers provided a unique mix of RNB Rap and sax and acoustic numbers. Musical scoring was provided by The Party Animal.
Smart Campus Girl is an inter-school pageant among schools coming from the Davao Region. What makes this search unique from other pageants is that the competition was not solely conducted for the candidates but was also aimed to harness the organization skills of the college student organizations.
