I have been planning, conceptualizing and producing weddings for years. And, needless to say, I’m sick of the same songs being played in every wedding. It’s even funny how all the couples would say they love how a certain song fits their life. And that song, mind you, is also the choice of 247304820724 other couples out there. Seriously, I want to puke everytime I hear 98 Degrees’ “I Do”. That said, let me save you all from unnecessary vomit as well, and let me present to you my top 10 picks for wedding songs as one seasoned Davao Wedding Coordinator:
(BTW, because I am a wedding coordinator by profession, I am entitled to do a countdown style for it to be more thrilling. Yes, the best ones are at the bottom!)
10. Grow Old With You – Adam Sandler
I was gonna skip this since it’s a little too predicable. But the lyrics are just so cute, and down-to-earth, that it had to be here and land the 10th spot.
“I wanna make you smile, whenever you’re sad, carry you around when your arthritis is bad..all I wanna do, is grow old with you.”
9. From This Moment – Shania Twain
This used to be a teenage favorite. Powerful lyrics, powerful voice and a powerful tune, what could go wrong right? It’s like the song itself breathes life into the moment. And the first lines “from this moment” presumes a declaration, which pretty much represents the entire idea of having a wedding ceremony in the first place.
“From this moment, I have been blessed. I live only for your happiness.”
8. Endless Love – duet by Lionel Richie and Diana Ross
I am not really a fan of this song, but my parents loved it. So maybe all their love brushed off until I began to feel good when I hear this song being played on the radio. The title itself brings about a lot of good vibes but it’s not for the skeptic. LOL. If a couple gets me to do their wedding planning and wants this song, maybe I’ll suggest an acoustic remake and someone that has the smoothness of Kyla’s voice.
“And I want to share all my love with you..no one else will do.”
7. Runaway – The Corrs
This song is best for couples who are doing the “against all odds” drama. The soft tunes make for a dramatic walk down the aisle and when the chorus comes, it kinds of makes you think of the difficult things that you had to face as a couple and how you just wanted to runaway and leave the world. Still romantic, isn’t it?
“Say it’s true, there’s nothing like me and you.”
6. You and Me – Lifehouse
Yet another “against all odds” drama here. However, unlike Runaway, this song is a little calmer. Perhaps when all the difficulties have ended, and you and your partner are in a point where you realize how important each other is. And how that, is all that really matters.
“I’ve been losing so much time..coz it’s you and me, and all other people with nothing to do, nothing to prove.”
5. Signal Fire – Snow Patrol
With a not-so-convincing title for a love song, Signal Fire hits my top choices for wedding songs because the message is so moving. Basically, the message of the song is how the other brings balance and “rightness” to one’s life. Pretty much like the “other half”/ “better half” metaphor. Listen to this song intently and you’ll secretly wish you had found yours. Full lyrics of the song may be found here.
“No I don’t want to wait forever. In the confusion and the aftermath, you are my signal fire.”
4. Angels Brought Me Here – Guy Sebastian
Before, I used to find this song corny. What the heck, I was an agnostic and I believed more in the power of choice than in angels. When I finally had time to sit in a salon and was forced to listen to the entire song intently, I discovered how it actually talks about a “long and winding journey” and how everything just falls into place when you know you’ve found the right one. Sigh.
“Standing here before you feels like I’ve been born again.”
3. Unbreakable – Westlife
If you know me too well, you’d know Westlife is going to land somewhere in this Top 10 Wedding Songs list. This song talks about undying adoration, gratitude, and how those things make one love unbreakable and unmistakable.
“Shared the laughter, shared the tears, we both know we’ll go on from here. Coz together we are strong…in my arms, that’s where you belong.”
2. Wedding Dress – Matt Nathanson
I know. You probably would think: who’s that guy? If I can rearrange the order of the universe, I would do everything in my power to be next to this guy, and be the subject of all his love songs. This song talks about how one let’s one’s self go when getting married. It talks about the fear of “ever after” and vulnerability but at the same time, how love can be so much more powerful than that. The speaker realizes all of this when he sees his bride in her wedding dress. It’s pretty realistic, yaknow. The best part? It’s actually a WEDDING SONG. See full lyrics here.
“So we lie here in the dark. All the wrong things on fire. In sickness and in health..to be with you, just to be with you..”
1. Feels Like Home – Chantal Kreviazuk
If I ever get married, I’m using this for my aisle march. The whole point with getting married (ideally), is to be able to have the blessing to create one’s home. And if you feel at home with the one whom you are with every day of your life (and you even swore to it!) then I think that’s the best feeling in the world.
“If you knew how I wanted someone to come along and change my life that way you’ve done..It feels like home to me.”
